Cierra Pendergrass

Where are you from?

Detroit, MI

What brought you to Chicago?

God calling us to Missio Dei Wrigleyville

What do you find challenging about living here?

Cost of living, constant violence

Why do you love it?

Chicago is vibrant, diverse, beautiful... always full of energy.

Why do you stay?

God has not led me to leave yet!

How has community affected your time here?

Community makes it easier to cope with the hustle & bustle of the city. It has made it easier to adjust to a totally different city-culture than we're used to.

Can you speak into the creativity found in the Chicago community? How does it inspire you?

Seeing so many styles of fashion everyday when I go out, inspires me to more authentically express myself! Because I love fashion & art.

When do you feel most empowered and comfortable in your own skin?

When I am downtown among many other

people, of various skin color, that are from all over the world collectively

Has living in the city affected your style and the way you approach what you purchase / invest in. If so, how?

No.

How has Chicago affected your worldview, if at all?

It's made me realize.. We're all an airplane(s) away from each other... never thought about it that way, but in Chicago, it's clear! The world is unfathomable, but I feel as though I get pieces of it everyday here.

Do you have an experience or a specific encounter here that has moved you/stayed with you that you'd be up for sharing?

Too many to name! None specifically. Lol

Is there any scripture that's been on your heart / resonated with you lately?

Hebrews 6:19-20

"19 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, 20 where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf.

Christ is the anchor for my soul...."

He keeps me grounded when all else is chaotic, unsteady, changing or unsure. Without Him, I'd surely drift away!

If you're in a season of distance from God, what are your questions / struggles?

How do we think critically about what's going on with us, when we're in a season of distance from God, or are not hearing Him clearly? What do you do when  the Teacher is quiet during the test? I think you have to turn to the Word.... the written Word that still speaks today. And The rhema Word that the Holy Spirit has spoken to you intimately, already. Hold on to it, be sure, and KNOW He's Immanuel.. God WITH us. He never left.. despite the season or hardship.

On the contrary, if you're experiencing closeness with God, how might you encourage our brothers and sisters who are wrestling with believing God is real and for us?

I've encountered the "realness" of God & can testify to it, because I met Him in some very dark places. Even when I wasn't looking for Him, or desiring Him. His love has transformed me in a way that no one ever has, or ever will. I know He is FOR us, because only the enemy/satan comes to kill, steal & destroy... but Jesus came that we might have Life more abundantly. And HIS word will never return void! We can count on Him! Ask Jesus & the power of the Holy Spirit to come into your heart and REVEAL himself to you! To make His presence known among you. Ask him to show you satans devices... that you might know much more how Christ has covered you, protected you, provided for you, and ALWAYS have been FOR YOU! We all experience doubt... but we fight it with the truth (the Word) and we pray in the midst of it, to get guidance & strength from God to help our unbelief.

Is there anything else you'd like to share about your time in Chicago?

God has truly met us here! We were obedient to His call... and His provision, favor & love has been showered upon us since we moved in Oct of 2016. We are excited to see what else He has in store, and so thankful for the journey of learning new things, embracing new people and trusting Him more.
